How Food Rescue Works
On a pre-arranged schedule (daily, numerous days a week, etc.) with local grocery stores, restaurants, caterers, bakeries, etc., Food Rescue’s full time Rescue Route Managers and volunteer ‘jumpers’ visit food donor locations throughout the Five County area to collect soon to expire perishable food, consisting primarily of meat, poultry, fresh produce and dairy, some of the most difficult food to get into the diets of hungry men, women and children.
Within hours of a pick-up from a food donor location, the food is quickly and safely (in our own refrigerated trucks) distributed to our Partner Agencies, free of charge, (listed on our 'Get Help' page) where it is either distributed to needy families, or in the case of the Goodwill Inn and Salvation Army, prepared for meals.
As our initiative gains momentum, and we are able to create additional win/win relationships with other food donors, our goal is to expand our Partner Agency relationships to include emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, domestic shelters and homeless shelters throughout the five-county area.
